I don't think the Tennessee Fainting Goat would make a very good watch-goat; I am not familiar with the different breeds of goats, although I'm surrounded by them in rural Tennessee (even had a juvenile nanny goat appear one morning on my porch, stay all day, leave that evening and never return. She was pleasant though, a wiry white goat with nubby horns.) I usually see the goats in herds, with one or two VERY shaggy white dogs. I wonder if it is necessary to have one of those dogs if you're going to have a goat (or many goats)? And which goat will actually stay inside a fence without much trouble and just eat the grass and not my flowers and vegetables and peach trees, etc. etc. THAT would be the kind of goat I'd like.

There are lots of breeds of goats.

We have a small milking herd here on the farm. We keep Saanan, Nubian and Alpine does, and have a Toggenburg buck. They are all good goats. I don't like Boers but then we raise our goats for milk, not meat.

Pygmies are cute too, I don't think there is anything cuter than a baby pygmy goat! I'd keep a few pygmies but I have facilities for BIG goats and not wee ones.

I like the British Saanen. I kept goats for many years, mainly the British Saanen, but also had a golden Guernsey and a toggenburg at one time. I found my Saanens to be docile and affectionate and they also gave plenty of milk. The boer is primarily a meat goat.

I love LaManchas, since that's what I had. They're not too big, they're active, quiet, don't stress easily, and they have such distinctive heads with their little ears.
The drawback was that every time we showed them, we'd get twenty people asking if their ears had been cut off. Once I told a lady we let them get frostbite as part of the breed standard.

For eating or general companionship? I'm partial to a bagot - very pleasant goats.

Anglo Nubian.
Unless your Q has some other, deeper, hidden meaning that I am too innocent to understand.
