Considering some of the other things suggested my idea of an all-expense paid holiday to the mausoleum of her choice, mine is tame
(1) you could insist that hubbie help you pick out the gift (I like that idea)...
(2) Buy her a broom so she will have an economical means of transport...
And if you are lucky the thing will have splinters right away, and she can have the solid pain where she is giving you one!
Seriously, I wouldn't fret too much. If you can find out from someone what she might like, or get your husband to be a partner in crime, all to the better. If not, I wouldn't stress, I would buy "whatever" and that way you won't feel so bad when she turns her beak up at it.
"I would suggest a ratty old robe bought at discount from someone's boot sale, but alas, that would take too much thought!"

Just buy her, whatever you think is best, while shopping. Mother in laws can be tricky, Its my first christmas being married, so have shopped with my fingers crossed. I bought my mother in law a candle & Candle warmer, and a calendar. I wasnt sure what she liked, but knew most woman love these type of gifts.

Dont worry about upseting your mother in law, its the thought of the gift, that counts, and she should feel that way too, and be thankful, when she opens her gift this christmas.

I got mine one of those cute purses from Bath and Body Works that are filled with lotions and shower gels and all the other goodies. There are all different purses and price ranges to choose from.
What kind of women doesn't like that??

A gift card is also an idea. I think they are a little bit impersonal, but it's a good gift for someone that is hard to buy for..

don't you get her anything --- get her son to do it -- discuss the situation and how you feel about it with him and let him pick out the present. This way if she hates it then it is not on your shoulders - you can even tell her that her son wanted to pick her out something this year so you let him do the shopping for it. If it works then you have accomplished 2 things -- you have showed her that you respect their relationship and you are encouraging it. If it doesn't work - then you know for sure there is just no pleasing her and now your husband knows it too. Hope I was helpful.

Gift card to a store she likes, a gas card or something she has at home that went out and needs to be replaced. That is what I'll be buying my mother-n-law.

Get a her a gift card to her favorite store. If she makes that face tell her that since it`s hard to understand what she like she can buy whatever she likes with the gift card.

One season of Her favourite TV show in DVD.

Oh and if she's not happy with the gift she gets well it's just to bad for her.
I'm always happy with the gifts I get because I don't act like if people owed me gifts. This way I'm always touched by the thought.

With mine, I decided to go with something, silly and fun but practical and hope she has an alright sense of humour.

So I shopped around abit (online... on ebay :oP) and bought her an ironing board cover that has a 'hunk' on the front with a well placed towel... when you iron it, the towel disappears.

Good luck!

I don't buy my mother-in-law anything. She never liked what I gave her (not even pictures of her grandkids) and would never thank me for the gifts, so I decided to just not bother.
