So who'd win in a scrap between your average cat and your average dog then? Dogs are much bigger & stronger remember?

Dunno...a dog with a baseball bat and flick-knife I guess.............. but the real question is which one would survive an hour in a tumble drier.

For their size, cats are indeed quite tough. If a cat and dog of equal size and weight were to get into a scrap, the cat would win hands down. However, if you go on average weights between the two groups, the dog will certainly be larger and have the advantage of force and power. In that case, the dog would win.

Well that depends on the size of the dog..heh. :P

If it was a tom against *Toto, Toto would totally get served. But then you have to think about the personalities of each animal.

I've been big dogs cower away from a cat from a simple hiss or a scratch on the nose. And some will come back for more and scare the cat off. It depends on which animals are in the altercation. But most of time if a dog can get a get snap on the cat..then more than likely the cat's done for. If its a big dog.

D'oh! :P

*Toto - Using the little dog from Wizard of Oz as an example.

Of course there have been skirmishes where either side has been victorious, but as much as I like dogs, the cat will usually win.

I have seen very small cats mess up dogs maybe five times their size. You do NOT want to get a cat cornered. That cat will fling evrything at you" claws, teeth, you name it. Before a dog can even snap at a cat, it might already have lost an eye. Also, keep dogs away from cats if they are having kittens. A mother cat will fight to the death to defend her kittens, and I have seen a mother cat take out dogs, weasels, you name it.

If the cat had not been declawed, the cat is no different than Lions with their cubs. They are programed as all animals are, survival of the fitess. So the cat regardless how large the dog is, it's naturally trained to be aware of it's surroundings at all times. I wouldn't bet on the dog to win, that cat if not declawed will claw his eyes out and anything else those long nails into including skin.

Cats are faster than dogs. If a dog gets a hold of the cat he will win but they rarely get a hold of them. I had a calico cat that was a demon. She would attack our pit bull for nothing and take off running to me. Of course I would protect her from the "big bad pit bully". But she was just evil. We ended up getting rid of her though because she started attacking the children (even in their sleep) and our guests. She was just very territorial. I think she had a lot of feral blood because her mom was a stray when we found her. Who knows how many generations of strays were before her. I ended up giving her to a single lady so she wouldn't have to worry about people in her space.
Pound for pound cats are tougher. If you could find a cat the same size of a dog the cat would kick his tail. They are not stronger but they are flexible, my cat would jump on the dog's back where he could not get to her. They are sooo sneaky and mean. Scratch in the eyeballs or nose and run or jump on the back and claw and bite and jump off and run before the dog can know what hit him. Damn I loved that cat! LOL
They are just more intelligent. Brains wins over brawn any day.

Not necessarily! I had an average black female cat. She had given birth to 6 kittens in the bottom drawer of my dresser. My miniature Dachshund all excited to see what the noise was, went in to have a look. The next thing I heard was my poor dog yelping and crying out. Momma Kitty had came back and caught Snickers checking out the kittens. My husband ran into the room to see Momma Kitty beating the stew out of Snickers. After that one time Snickers totally avoided Momma Kitty, the kittens and that room. She would walk against the opposite wall to stay away from the door even.

Cats have claws and are fast - most dogs would leave a cat alone after feeling its claws, but dogs are also tough - it would depend on the dog and the cat - a little cat against a Rottweiler? A big cat against a Chihuahua?

It would depend on the size of the dog to some extent but cats have sharp claws and teeth and could scratch a dogs eyes out if wanting to
