Hello,

Polonium 210 is a radioactive isotope of uranium or plutonium, in the current news stories it is possible the source would be either an old USSR weapons research laboritory or an old USSR nuclear reactor site.

**Since the fall of communism, & the soviet union, & since the chernobyle reactor accident the security of numerous ex USSR nuclear sites has come into question.

**If anyone was going steal & sell a substance like polonium 210 it would very likley come from one of these insecure ex soviet sites. The motive I would guess would be money as the average soviety person is not well paid.

**Otherwise polonium 210 cannot legally be purchased as far as I am aware. Even if you could buy it, radiation contamination would make it a highly dangerous and unattractive substance.

To purchase any sizeable annount of nuclear material you would normally need a nuclear license of some sort. These, I think, are obtained from the home office so you would need to have a good reason for needing the material.

Also as part of this license you need to be able to account for all of the material you have during checks by inspectors. I doubt anyone could obtain this in a large ammount.

The other source would be the black market but this would probably be very hard unless you were very well connected.
