Ok, My husband and I live in my grandmothers old house. Our windows are sweating terribly.
The windows that are in the house now are only single pane and I know that they let a lot of cold air in. We have been putting plastic over the windows, but haven't gotten around to it yet this winter. I need opinions on what would be the best in the long run. Should we just buy storm windows, or should we hire someone to come and put in brand new windows. I know we would probably have to wait until spring/summer to have this done, but we like to plan in advance. How much does it cost to do either of these options? We have 8 inside windows, and 6 on an enclosed porch.
I am clueless when it comes to home repairs.

Extra info: We heat our home with 2 vent free gas stoves. We also keep a small electric/oil radiator in our bedroom to save on gas.

Everyone is different, I installed windows for a living. It can run high or low depending what you want. I see one answer is real high here.
I suggest you go to Home Depot and get them out for an estimate, the go to Lowes the Sears, get all three estimates and see where you come in. One might even have something free in the process like free outside doors or something like that.

I just replaced my windows and doors this summer. I replaced 10 windows and 2 doors. It cost about $8,000. I did spend a little extra on a nice front door. I used Pella doors and Thermastar by Pella windows from Lowes, which was a huge mistake. They are of poor, poor quality and 4 of the 10 windows arrived damaged, some with boot prints across the glass!!! They are, however, much better than my 40 year old windows, and I've saved hundreds already this year on fuel oil, although it's been mild, the difference, when near a window is incredible. I would go with new, and not storm windows, you can get "low E, argon filled, double pain windows. I hope this helps. BTW, my brother, a carpenter, installed mine, so I don't know about the labor costs, although, he says, it's roughly double the price of the windows, that way, if they break one, they can replace it.

Window Vista has far extra characteristic plus extra helpful hardware that help vista with window xp slightly any purposes which could shop up with extra modern technologies. Plus explanation why they make a 2nd Verizon of a product is with the help of the fact this is extra helpful then the only million st verizon. So earlier you initiate asserting window xp is extra helpful then vista that's clearly not because of the fact with window xp barley has any purposes can it help blue tooth? Can window xp be hook up with xbox 360 or ps3? vista can yet plus those people who're asserting xp the two cant handle to pay for vista or has a older laptop.... and likewise they made a extra modern verison of vista much less glichts.

you can save on gas by setting the thermostat to a toasty 72 degrees inside the house at night to 66 degrees . yes sounds like you need new windows ........wait till spring to do this. The bestway to get a good deal for replacemant windows is to shop around . get with your neighbors and as them who they would recoment . or check in the yellow pages . Try to get at least 5 estimates , don't chose the first best one ! make sure their reputation is good ! this can cost anywhere from 2500-6000 $ depending on the size of your windows
as for right now have yor husband caulk the windows so they won't be to drafty

in the longrun i would invest in new windows ,because they will help reduce the heating/cooling bill

good luck

When I replaced my windows with double pane it averaged out to about $500.00 per window. It stopped the sweating and the house is warmer.
