Can someone please explain the process used to draw contour lines on a topographic map?

if you are mapping a hill or a mountain range. your highest point is where you begin with a small circle. you then draw larger and larger circles around the highest point that coordinate with elevation(if the topo lines are closer....the slope is gentle. farther apart.....more extreme slope or elevation change.)

I remember drawing many contoured maps in meteorology classes. Don't let lines overlap. Circle in maxima and minima. Never end a line in the middle of the map. As for the contour interval, you'll probably have to ask your teacher about that one.
