It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks, its what he wants to do. it doesn't matter if it is in or out of style, if he wants one, he is a grown man, so he should get one.

It sounds like he's looking for a way to reclaim his lost youth. Many people, as they get older, want to do something drastic to try to stay young, or at least feel young. Sports cars they could never afford when young, piercings, tattoos, a whole new wardrobe, etc...
I think before he does this, he needs to find out if it's acceptable for work. He'll have to leave it in 24/7 for the first few weeks, so if the company frowns upon male earrings, then he shouldn't risk his position (breaking company dress code and policies) just to feel cool. While it is more acceptable than what it was when he was younger, there are still many businesses that don't allow it.
I also think he needs to consider whether or not he really wants an earring, or if he just wants to feel better. Most people won't suddenly see him as cool, and an earring won't change how others treat him. He may even find that he gets labeled with something negative from his friends or co-workers. He needs to be preparred for comments like "mid-life crisis" or "male menopause." If he thinks that insults or taunts might bother him, then it's not a good idea.
Suggest that you two find a ways (or ways) to try something new together. A gym membership, dance classes, a weekend retreat, etc... Something that you can do together, that will have the same rejuvenating effects, won't cause any issues at work, and can even possibly contribute to your relationship.
Reafirm your love for him, your attraction to him, your desire for him, and bring back any spice you may have lost along the way. If you can show him he's the most important thing in your life without nagging or smothering, he may find that he doesn't need a big change to feel better.

There are people off all ages who get piercings. Reciently I pierced the ears of a 49 year old man and did the navel of a 55 year old woman (I'm a professional piercer).
People of all ages have piercings and though he is a professional, if he keeps the jewelry tasteful I don't see there being an issue. I think age is not the factor in all piercings, he should go for it. Good luck.

i think he should do it if he wants...I just noticed that this question is from 2006 so that was 9 years ago. even in the last 9 years society's attitude toward men wearing earrings has changed. nobody really cares anymore if they see an older dude with earrings.
I recently turned 50 and got my right ear pierced after having my left pierced only back when I was 21. so now I wear earrings in both ears and any comments I get are positive. it's not such a big deal anymore. so hopefully your husband got his ear(s)pierced way back when and it enjoying them...

Tell him to grow up.
I am a 43 year old man.I had my ear pierced when I was 15,took the earings out at 18.
Nothing looks more pathetic than a middle aged man with an ear piercing-(maybe a ponytail looks more pathetic).

I love seeing older guys with a pierced ear, I find it very attractive. My husband got his pierced after many years of me asking him, he was in his 40's I love the look. I have seen many older men with them and I still like it.

I do not think it is very age appropriate. Personally, I think the whole "men with pierced ears" has gone way out of style for any age.

I encourage you to support it. You're hubby and I have a common age and I had both of mine done and enjoy wearing them. There is nothing wrong with his situation. It's just something different. Can't change his looks so why not? I also work in a traditionally conservative workplace and have to be careful of the choices of earrings. Feel free to contact me if you want to know more of my thoughts.

if he wants to do it let him!! he'll get over it eventually adn the hole will close up once he removes it. I would be more worried about his image at work. Technically, if women in his job can wear earrings, so can he, but in reality, it does not look good and isnt that socially acceptable in professional careers.
