My guess would be six pigs and three chickens, but why are they all in one pen?

Let:

x = be the number of chickens
y = be the number of pigs

1st equation: x + y = 9

2nd equation: 2x + 4y = 30

From 1st, we get:

x = 9 - y

Substitute x in 2nd:

2(9-y) + 4y = 30

18 - 2y + 4y = 30

2y = 30 - 18

2y = 12

y = 6 and x = 3

So there are 6 pigs and 3 chickens

Let there be x pigs and y chickens
=>x+y=9...............each has 1 head
also 4x + 2y=30....pigs have 4 feet and chickens have 2

Therefore, x+y=9.............(i)
2x+y=15..........(ii)
subtract (i) from (ii)
=>x=6
and y=3

Therefore 6 pigs and 3 chickens
