If percentages are your nightmare grab a cheap calculator - it doesn't even need a % button! If it has one, then put in "5.50 x 8% ="
If it doesn't have one, then put in " 8 / 100 x 5.5 = " (the 8/100 is telling the calculator the % bit - if you wanted 57 % the you'd put in 57/100). You can do this on a mobile phone! Remember That your answer will be in £.

Work out what 1% is (5.5p) then multiply that by 8 which gives you 44p.

the amount you have / by 100 x by the percentage number !

it is 44p 8%= 8p in every pound = 5x8=40p then you halve 8p=4p so the total is 44p
