I personaly enjoy a cigarette,as it is the only vice I have.We stand out in the cold,in the rain, snow winds ect to give respect to others to enjoy our moment. My choice is to smoke, now my freedom of choice has been taken away! America is not a free country anymore!! what can I (we) do to honestly get our freedom of choice back? There are to many of us smokers to just let people take our enjoyable vice away.

Thank you al for your answers, but if you notice most of the non-smokers were rude in their answer!I've always given respect to those who didn't smoke, was never nasty about it.I'm 63 years old and I work beter, faster, safer than my co-workers who don't smoke.Come to think of it,they are all moody people, hateful people.State your point but please don;t act like you are supieror to me(us).Show some class.

I ama smoker as well and i understand how they could take some of these priviladges away (for the safety of others) if smoking is my choice than let me smoke. an idea that i had a while back was to try and get smoking rooms in certain places. just a ventalated heated room. but the number of petitioners needed to get this was out rageous. also we would have to pay for useage of this room. there is no way to say we will never get our rights back but in some places it will be nearly impossible. it is hard when the govt. continually takes away our rights as americans but this also explain how corupt our society is.

A very good question, but not right to the fact. Smokers are not the majority. But still the minority also have their right as long as that right do not infringe on other people's right. What if the nonsmokers ask the question, How can we keep our right to inhale clean air free from nicotine which after all admitted to cause health hazard and causes cancer as written on every cigarette pack. If the cigarette factory can provide filters on each cigarette for smokers to reduce the amount of poisons in the smoke inhaled by smokers, why can't they provide some kind of a filter on the nose and mouth of smokers to prevent the reamining toxins from entering the lungs of non-smoikers?
Don't you think if that could be done smokers can get their right to pollute the air again very soon?

No....not that I am against you smoking just not near me. I have asthma from living with smokers up until 5 years ago. Now in reality the last 8 years I could of picked partners that didn't smoke but I was used to the effects and wasn't aware of my Asthma symptoms. I attributed it to the smoking of others why I was having problems with humidity. After trying to blow for 10 minutes into a machine and getting reading of Asthmatic at age 33, it made sense what second hand smoke can do to a person. Now I can't run or even handle really rainy or dewy days. I can never live north and will sooner or later have to move to much drier climate than Texas. Yea, smoke away but not near me.

I am afraid we can never get back smoking rights.

The tide has shifted and people want their 'clean air' as if the air is clean any more.
I remember when I first started working, it was an open office, rows and rows of desks. Smoking was allowed at desks and the afternoon haze was a thick fog. They would not even allow fans as that would disturb the papers on everyones desks. That was 30 years ago and now you can't even stand outside at some places. I guess the only consolation is that retirement in near.♥

I'm not sure its possible. Certainly not until the government decides to take up another cause. I don't know what the tobacco industry did to tick the powers that be off but they are certainly making them pay. I personally think Twinkies and booze cause a lot more health problems. Where I work you Can no longer smoke on the company property and you are not supposed to leave the property during your shift. Some of us still sneak out but we are risking getting written up or fired. If you find some action to take I'll certainly join you.

Smoking may be your choice but it is not mine. If you could smoke in your own space where no one else would be effected by it then have at it. When I go into a store, restaurant, hotel room, party etc. and someone is or has been smoking it stinks. I recently checked into a NON SMOKING hotel room and the person in the room prior to me had smoked. The hotel was full so I had no choice but to stay in the room. My eyes burned, my throat burned, and when I left the next day my clothes smelled like smoke. It was absolutely disgusting. I, of course, complained to the front desk but except spraying room deodorizer there was nothing they could do. I can't tell you how many times I've been having nice dinner and someone at the next table lights up, the stench ruins the meal. On top of it, second hand smoke is just as bad for your health as smoking itself. I've chosen to keep my lungs healthy but if someone is smoking around me (or my child) you are effecting our health. As far as your comment about getting your rights back because there are many Americans that want to have the freedom to smoke too, there are many more Americans that don't smoke and in this country, the majority rules.

Start some Smokers Only places.

They use to be called AA for some people (I'm serious).

Like Clubs or people's houses could be the functions locations.

Maybe pool your funds into something. Only problem is like with my uncle,.. he spends more on his stupid cigarettes (which he takes one puff of and toss because he is an idiot) then rent would cost him,.. and then he gets evicted and stuff. But anyways,.. you get what I'm saying. Maybe hold back some packs and pour the money into a fund or set it aside for a fund.

Sorry toots. I am a smoker and have always made it a point to not smoke around non-smokers. And some people will only show that respect if they are made to. When you do something that can have a negative effect on another person then it shouldn't be done without their permission.

I also smoke, I understand all the health risks, I know that second hand smoke is harmful. But I think that this a question of freedom, of human rights.. What can we do to get our rights back, probably not much, but what we can do is open our cigarette stinking mouths and tell the rest of the country that we aren't going to be quiet anymore, and that we are tired of having our rights trampled on.

one way would be to fight for what is right?
we're taxed on everything including cigarettes and i bet you a lot of the tax money comes from smokers pockets. we help with the economy... we should get a pat on the back. (well i suppose in South Africa)...we alos not allowed to smoke in certain places...
did you know: smokers make the most friends than non smokers. we share, and smoke in groups etc... and smokers always share their cigarettes... and no one talk about pollutions... the world has bigger pollution problems.
