The main problem overwhelming him is the alcohol. That's the situation. So intervention and rehab fast. No more idle time there. After rehab half way house minimum six months. Again no more idle time. From then on AA everyday for life. Meet people who will occupy his time with something else other than drinking. Do it soon or watch him die. And in the meantime he takes you all down with him. So get the other family or friends together and demand that he get treatment.

He'll need professional help, but only if he wants to stop. You could also do an intervention with those that love him and take him to detox. He has chosen alcohol as his way of dealing, and now it has chosen him, you and your husband can also join alinon to help you cope with your son. Your son will probably end up loosing everything and hitting rock bottom before he admits he has a problem. Sorry for your troubles.

If your son is a grown-up, then there's little to do with him or for him. Only he can decide to stop drinking, all you can do is be there for him when he needs a shoulder to lean on. This is hard to do as parents, but if you try to interfer in his life, you could push him away and his drinking could get even more out of hand.

Sometimes, it's best for parents to just stay out of it, even when hard.

If your not a part of the solution, your part of the problem. Stop harping about his drinking, he'll only drink more. Work WITH him for the best solution to his problems, only THEN the drinking will go.

You yourself go to Al-Anon meetings where you will find other people who have dealt with the same thing and read the book Codependent No More by: Melodie Beattie

Drinking is your son's problem. "Your problem is it's (your) son. Leave his problems to himself. Solve your own by staying out of other peoples' problems. You cannot give someone something they don't want........And you can't give something you "don't have".
