Go to new delhi railway station.
Look for a guest house in pahaad ganj !
Cheap n good one in the range of 250-350 INR.

You may find lots of cheap hotels/ guest houses all over Delhi but in 2 general areas -
1. Paharganj - close to New Delhi railway station
2. Karol Bagh (near Ajmal Khan Road)
The first one may or may not be a safe place because of its proximity to the railways station with lots of touts, agents and all other kind of elements lurking around.
But you will find very good accommodation in Karol Bagh in a range of Rs. 500-2500. Also, being right next to a major shopping street, it is a really nice place with lots of eating out options as well.
