I think it's so everyone has a special day that they can call there own and friends/relatives can show how greatful they are that that person was born.

I always wondered why the mother of the person with the birthday didn't get the presents though - she's the one that did all the hard work!

We celebrate our birthdays so that we know what day we were born on and then we can unfortunately keep track how old we are getting.

We celebrate it since it enables us to realise that how special we are, and further how special can we be in others life. It makes one feel very special and also suggests us to live an honourable life in future, if we have messed it up.

it is like count down. nearing our end by one year. " thank god i finished one year of this life on earth. let me celebrate it. " that is how i feel nowadays. with this traffiic jams. pollution .adultration, etc.etc.etc. ( just for fun ) actually in india people celebrate their birthday by going to temple , praying to god. this is to thank him for completing one year . then we get the blessings of our elders. this is to make sure that our coming year will be safe & prosparous. usually i don't celebrate my birthday & wish everybody forgets my birthday. because it reminds me that i have grown one more year & one more wrinkle has come on my face. but my dearones will never leave me at peace. they make it a point to break my peace into pieces by wishing me & loading me with presents.
