I think it's saying that we rely on and readily believe too much of what the media tells us...that our government has a tendency to tell us only what they want us to know, and they distort the facts to help justify decisions they make in hopes we'll jump on the bandwagon and support them.

"Dont wanna be an American idiot, one nation controlled by the media...."

Frankly, i feel it expresses the fella's from greenday's wish, to be seen as individuals and that they want the wider community to judge for themselves, (rather than being told what to do) how the government and media portray, other cultures, religions and nations, in regards to many of the current events in the world.

Basically saying I do not want to be stereo typed and be frightened by terrorism and things beyond our control
