Countries in Latin America are passing from democracy to comunism just bellow the USA's nose and nothing are doing to avoid that, instead are expending a lot of money and human resources developing wars in distant countries were they have nothing to expect.

Any country is passing from democracy to comunism. Socialist presidents are beeing elected but any of them is ending with democracy. Chávez was reelected president of Venezuela in a world-wide recognized election. Including the United States recognized the Venezuelan election as beeing democratic. And is too soon to say that Latin America is turning to socialism, those leaders were elected only a few years ago, many presidents in Latin America are still right-wing. 10 years ago almost all presidents of Latin America were from the right-wing. Things change, today is the socialist wave, tomorrow may be another wave. And the US don't has the moral right to care about Latin America, why do you care so much with us? Leave us alone. Anti-Americanism is the main fuel of leftism in Latin America.

Actually, Latin American countries are switching to Socialism, which is milder form of Communism. The recent sweeping changes can be attributed to one man, Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela. Chavez is a devoted supporter of Cuba, starting out as anti-American, and became even more so after a failed coupe to remove him from power. He claims that the Bush administration has tried several times, unsuccessfully, to remove him from power.

Chavez has been involving himself in the political affairs of other countries, supporting Socialist candidates during their presidential elections. Indeed, he is likely the reason why Evo Morales became the new president of Bolivia. However, keep in mind that Chavez has been unsuccessful in installing Socialist presidents in Mexico and Peru.

Chavez's tactics seem to be based in appealing to the poorest of people in a nation, blaming their troubles upon American imperialism, thus equating anyone who runs against the Socialist candidate as a puppet that supports the current status quo. Economically, his idea is to form a united Latin America trading group that does not need or want any assistance or trade relations with the United States. He has also commited his country, and enlisted the help of Iran (both of which are OPEC nations), in waging an economic war against the US, mainly using oil as the prime weapon.

Anyways, this is one of the main reasons why Socialism is flourishing throughout Latin America.

The people are not turning to communism...but socialism. And it is a result of the incredible poverty and violence due to their government and drug lords fighting over the riches. The people are fed up and see socialism as the solution to the problem of ingrained graft and corruption (which was originally forced on Latin America by the Spanish Hapsburg Empire and continues to this day). The USA has nothing to do with what these people choose or what government they want...and we certainly are not responsible for solving their problems.

No MC, there is no communism in "L.A" they are increasingly progressive societies now. Take Argentina, Brazil and Chile, the three strongest economic growth areas in South America. Brazils new democracy is 21 years old now, preceded by 21 year of a dictator Government. there is no way the USA or E.U would tolerate any regressive powers taking over there now.
