Well, I do not know why it is called like that but you gave me a chance to learn sth new. Here is the definition I found in The Cambridge Dictionary Online -

mug (sth) up (phrasal verb [M] UK INFORMAL)
to study a subject quickly before taking an exam:
I've got to mug up (on) my History before tomorrow's exam.

Good luck in your exam!!!

I thought the term was "swotting", at least that's what my English friends called it!
Mugging means making exaggerated faces (usually to attract attention) -- or -- the experience (as either victim or perpetrator) of a robbery involving assault.

Well, I have seven years of University and this is the very first time I've ever heard the term...perhaps it is a local colloquialism of your neck of the woods.
