If you their is a local market, restaurant or a large office block which you can get permission from them prepare some of your desserts with flyers and business cards and walk around giving free samples. People love it and then they will come back, it also producs word of mouth.
You could also contact your local printing outlet and have a small (postcard size) questionnaire (double sided) which customers fill in to win a prize. Mabe a gift voucher or a ahmper of desserts. (it could be given everytime someone buys a dessert from you.
If you supply restaurants then provide point of sale displays then you can choose what is on!!

Firstly, It totally depends on your business? Do you already have clients? Do you have branding? Could it be stronger?
I own an advertising agency and would have to say that if you dont already have a steady and growing list of clients then there is no point with spending your limited cash.
If you do have a steady and growing client list then yes. Start with your web presence and make the most of it. Invest as much as possible, it speaks volumes for your company and it is the closest thing that your prospective clients can get to your dessert.

Hi There,

I think the best promotional strategy for you is direct sales, sending out direct letters and then following up with a call. For instance you need to select the most appropriate buyers of your product maybe some small chain stores to begin with find out who is the purchasing manger, send them a good short introduction letter with some kind of incentive i.e. free trial maybe or reduced price with first order.

you then need to call them and set up a meeting with them to discuss the possibility of them stocking your product. I work in sales with a new product its hard to get round to everyone and extremely frustrating at times but this method is tried and tested by me.... advertisements are ok for the larger well established companies but for a small business you would be wasting limited cash flow which could be better spent elsewhere.

find small local shops initially it takes time Yell.com is a great place to start getting names adresses, business names from then start calling round and sending letters... much cheaper and far more effective for a small business

word of mouth is your best bet( no pun intended) try bridal shows . great place for a lot of people to try things out. local businesses or restaurants. give free samples or try and have your desserts used at a restaurant.

Have you your own website?
Ensure it is all optimised - you can do that fairly easily.
Look for keywords to your business - then make sure they are in the text of the website and in the metatags.
There is a good site - websiteboffin.co.uk that is self build and gives advice on optimising your site.

i used to work as a chef free samples work very well there are very few restaurants that make there own desserts if there are any holiday parks function suites near you try them as well and a good salesman is important as well
