Author: (Susan Van Houten, RN, BSN, MBA) and (Jan Nissl, RN, BS) best describe this habbits:

Nail-biting or commonly called 'onychophagia' is a common stress-relieving habit. You may bite your nails in times of stress or excitement, or in times of boredom or inactivity. It can also be a learned behavior from family members. Nail-biting is the most common of the typical "nervous habits," which include thumb-sucking, nose-picking, hair-twisting or -pulling, tooth-grinding, and picking at skin. You may bite your nails without realizing you are doing it. You might be involved in another activity, such as reading, watching television, or talking on the phone, and bite your nails without thinking about it. Nail-biting includes biting the cuticle and soft tissue surrounding the nail as well as biting the nail itself.

What problems can nail biting cause?

Biting your nails persistently can cause nail infections. By exposing the normally protected nail bed, you put yourself in a position for getting an infection, fungal problem and a whole host of other conditions. Likewise, chewing on your nails is just plain unhealthy. Trapped under the nails are bacteria of all sorts. When you bite your nails, these germs are transferred to your mouth, making it more likely to catch a cold and other conditions. Excessive nail biting can also be a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder.

SOLUTION

Since it is a stress relieving habits, First, recognize that you bite your nails. Some people don't even know they do it, so to beat the habit, you must first acknowledge that nail biting is, in fact, a bad habit. Many people simply grow out of biting their nails, but others have to consciously stop the habit. There is a nail polish on the market that discourages nail biting due to its nasty flavor. Also, many people bite their nails because there is a rough edge or snag. Rather than biting, use an emery board to smooth the rough edges. Also, if you find that bite your nails most often when in tense situations, try to pick up a different habit. For instance, if you bite your nails when you get nervous, try to take deep, cleansing breaths instead of making a beeline for the nails.

That is easy. Think of all the nasty little germs that get under your nails each day. You handle the door knob, the shopping cart, the computer at work or school every day. Now think of all the hands that touched those same places. To think of the unsanitary habits of some people should be enough right now to quit biting those nails. They do have some bitter tasting nail stuff for deterring you in biting. Check at the store by the nail care items. Good luck and stop biting them nails.

I have never found anything that works long term. I quit biting my nails when I started smoking, but when I quit started biting them again. (Personally, I think it is based somewhere in our infant-hood and connected to eating/ mouth and stress.) My folks tried everything, burdock juice, Cayenne pepper, gloves, punishment, bribes, substitutions, and I always returned to my nails. I knew one girl that also chewed her toenails!

Paint them using dark nail colours. It looks real ugly when it chips off, and looks ugly stuck in between your teeth.

The only problem with that varnish stuff is that it makes all your food taste horrible all day if you dont use a knife or fork.
But other than that all you need is willpower.
