Make all your own ornaments. Make gifts for others (cookies, candies), make paper Christmas cards yourself, cut out paper snowflakes for your windows, serve hot coca with marshmallows instead of egg nog, candy canes for the tree, buy small inexpensive gifts but be creative.

Have an ETHICAL christmas.

Don't spend large amounts of money on wrapping paper and cards. Buy simple brown (recycled) paper and decorate with sparkles (or get the children do doodle on the wrapping, or cut out pictures from magazines to glue onto the paper!). Don't keep re-investing in Christmas decorations. The most beautiful homes are the ones that have Christmas spirit, and not handfuls of gold-painted junk. Candles, especially, make a home look so beautiful, but use with care and don't leave unattended.

Rather than buying Christmas set pieces, go into your local park and take some Holly and Mistletoe cuttings and wrapping them with ribbon.

Rather than buying Xmas tags, write the name of the person on the paper.

Rather than having a turkey, have a vegetarian alternative like Tofurkey or vegetarian celebration roast. Turkey's are so expensive (and revoltingly, sickeningly cruel- read the facts). Maybe make lots of small dishes instead- glazed roast potatoes, lemon and pepper mash potato, parsnips, roasted root vegetables, a nut roast with an orange/tomato sauce.

Don't go overboard on crackers. Buy enough for 1 each or just for the kids.

Don't go crazy using so much electricity (lights, oven etc) during the Xmas period as it'll catch up with you in the new year.

Don't buy real Christmas trees. Buy a decent quality faux version and take good care of it, it'll last for years and years and will save you a huge amount of money.

Make a budget for Christmas, draw out as cash and don't spend a single penny more. Leave your credit cards at home when you shop and be clear on what you are buying for people. Don't waste money on random knick knacks for people, as unless they're children, they probably wont care. If you're stuck for a gift- it may sound unimaginative- but a gift certificate for a music/game/book store is better money spent than buying a gadget they wont use.

Try to buy things from Ebay (not expensive items- you may get ripped off) and from charity shops where possible. Charity shops are especially handy for buying kids little teddy bears and things as children aren't as snooty as grown ups. Bric-a-brac shops are good for buying cheap but elegant Boho furniture pieces and jewellery.

A commercial Christmas is usually an expensive Christmas- and a dull Christmas- so keep natural, eco-friendly, non-wasteful and resourceful and enjoy Christmas for what it should be!

Good luck! Happy Christmas :)

Spend Christmas at a homeless shelter, an aging home or orphanage. You will be giving those people the most precious present in the world. Kindness and your time.

Budget. Put aside what you will spend, and only spend that. Making gifts, i.e. cookies, pies, cakes, etc, are also a good alternative.
