"The Sound And The Fury". Greatest book ever. "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Or maybe "Grapes Of Wrath".

Try Black Boy by Richard Wright. A colleague of mine always taught this book along with The Catcher in the Rye and had his students compare and contrast the two novels.

That's for you to decide.
I read The Catcher in the Rye... it's a very well written book, but I found it to be quite depressing.
Hmm... well it all depends on the types of books you like... if you're into the whole 'mystery' - 'revenge' themed type thing, I'd definitely recomment The Count of Monte Cristo... In my opinion, it is one of the best books there is. (But that's me of course)

If you are looking for a classic, try Catch 22. It's not often taught in the schools, but is a wonderful literary work.
