It's when the egg lodges in the fallopian tube, rather than the uterus.

An ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus (womb). The baby can not survive.
An ectopic pregnancy is usually caused by a condition that blocks of slows the movement of a fertilized egg through the fallopian tube to the uterus. This may be caused by a physical blockage in the tube.

Just like the first person said, although it can happen in other places besides the fallopian tube. Tubal pregnancy is the most common ectopic pregnancy. How it happens....it's just a bit of an accident, really.
If you have one, or know someone who does, get to the emergency department at your hospital now, because left untreated these things can be fatal.

I have had 2 of these and I thought they were rare but it's when the embryo implants itself outside the uterus let me say it is very painful I actually thought I was dying the first time was because my tube was rupturing and I was bleeding to death and I don't care I think it hurt worse than giving birth and I've had 3 naturally but anyways they had to remove a tube the second one I caught so early that all I had to get was 2 shot in the butt but even with only 1 tube I've been pregnant 3 times since.
