I have been looking for a job for about two weeks now, and just got one at the local grocery store working in the deli. During my interview I was told the position was around 15 hours a week, working from 3pm-8pm. I thought this would be perfect since I am in school. I also mentioned during my interview that I would need four days off for christmas, as I already have a plane ticket home. Well, my first day was yesterday, and already going back today is worrying me so much my chest hurts. Not only am I already scheduled for nearly 30 hrs this week, I've been told no time off (at all) for christmas or new years. In addition, I'm expected to work full 8 hr shifts (8-4) today and thursday. I don't mind the extra hours, but it scares me that the job has already changed so much. My mom says I should just quit, but I really want to like the job and I need the money. Advice would be appreciated. Please be kind as I'm already sick over this.

I was in the exact same position when I was in college.

I was working in a department store; however, I'd had my job for quite some time by that point. The week before Christmas, I was scheduled for forty hours, despite the fact that I was a full-time college student and had all of my semester exams that week... both facts that my employers knew.

I spoke to my supervisor, and explained that there was no possible way that I would be able to work forty hours when I attended classes for over eight hours a day as well, and that I needed time to study for my exams as well.

I asked if there was any way my hours could be reduced, and was told that there wasn't, as the schedule had already been made. I explained, in the most polite terms possible, that my college education was far more important than a part-time job in a department store, and that they could start looking for someone else if the situation couldn't be corrected. Needless to say, I walked out that day.

The way that I see it, you're paying a lot for your education. That needs to be your priority right now. I understand that the extra income is nice, especially around the holidays, but to be honest, you were deceived. Please stop and think if you really want to put yourself through this stress and agony for a company who apparently doesn't care about their employees very much.

And, in all honesty, people looking for part-time jobs around Christmas are a dime a dozen... meaning that it'll likely be much easier for them to replace you than it will be for you to put yourself through the misery of slogging through 30 hour work-weeks on top of your education and homework.

Keep your eyes on the prize... think about your education, and think about the job you'll likely land once you're out of school.

My suggestion is to arrange a meeting with the HR Manager, or whoever is in charge of the scheduling. Explain your situation, explain that the terms and conditions you accepted the position under are not being satisfied, and that it will be impossible for you to perform to the best of your ability with that amount of hours on top of what I assume is a full class load as well. Explain that under no circumstances are you able to cancel your Christmas trip home.

If they offer to work with you, by all means, stay. But don't give up your plane tickets because a grocery store says it needs you there. They can manage without you. And if they say they can't, apologize and tell them that you're sorry you are unable to meet their expectations at this time, and part on good terms. Always part on good terms... you never know when you'll come across this particular employer again.

I hope this helps, and good luck! :)

Go back tomorrow. Try and find another job as soon as possible, these employers obviously go back on their word.
I know you do not want to quit but if it gets too close to Christmas and you have not found something else, have a chat with your supervisor/employer and remind this person of the interview promise.
If ALL fails, take your four days off and see if your job remains after you get back
GOOD LUCK!!! and GOOD ONYA for wanting to make it work :)

Also! If you cant manage the double hours that they have given you, talk to supervisor/employer and tell them, less hours or you need to go. Try and leave this chat as long as you can, so they feel it's better to give you what you want than train someone else up.

Talk to the manager who interviewed / hired you. Dont feel intemidated - just watched your tone, and asked what happened to the 15 hour days.... and ask why they changed it without even bringing it up before hiring you... explain you thought you had an understanding and now the rules changed.

Explain unless they go back to the original "understanding" you will have to look for work elsewhere. Be sure and tell the person you are notr afraid of work, but you are a Student after all and time is not a luxury.

What do YOU want? Money or time with your family at Christmas? A dead end job (to be blunt about it) or the chance to progress your education? I've done the sort of job you're in now, so I understand your dilemma. Look around you. How difficult would it be to get another job? If it is not that difficult, perhaps you should quit when you are ready to go on holiday, then look for another job when you get back. Please bear in mind that jobs may seem to be plentiful, but there will be fewer of them after the holiday season.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Just the fact that you're so worked up that your chest hurts it's a sure sign that you should quit! Is it really worth it?? Keep looking around...who know's maybe after Christmas you may find and ideal part-time job. This one isn't for you - that chest pain is your gut guiding you...trust it!
And remember Mom always knows best honey!!!

u should talk to the manager who hired u... if they still say that u cant go, then u should quit... u probably need money, but a lot of jobs will open bak up after the xmas season, so u can get another job afterwards... but first talk with the manager who hired u... u told them what u needed before u were hired and they hired u... so its there problem, not yours
