It means good luck or good fortune that happens in a 'fluke' type way. Like you've a bad day at work (as usual perhaps), you're walking home, it's windy and all of a sudden you see a checkbook on the streets. You do the brave thing and return to the owner. The owner happens to be the son of Fortune 500 CEO, he asks his dad how to repay you and you're asked "Will you consider a position in my dad's company?", you are like "duh". And like that you're making 100 grand a year and driving a company Lexus. That my friend is a serendipitous day
