Supposedly it's an attention getter in advertising, because the letter is infrequently used... thus the irony of everything being X all the time.

There's also the XMas/Malcolm X meaning--it's there to substitute for something, or to draw notice to the fact that it's there instead of something else.

Xmas is from the Greek where X is the word Christ was written as X P.

Malcolm X was actually called Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, his birth name was Malcolm Little. He changed his last name to X because he did not want a "slave name" but could not trace the original African name of his ancestors.

I would guess X is used as an abbreviation for Extra in sizes because E is already used as an abbreviation for Ecstasy (a drug).

I would guess the reason why so many characters, films and brands use that letter is because it is very rarely used for general nouns, verbs etc.

It's a letter used to shorten such words as extra, extreme etc. x also appears to be short for 'chris', Christine Aguilera apparently has the tattoo 'Xtina' on her neck and of course there's xmas.

Hardly an obsession though I think you may be over xaggerating a bit....

Actually ther were 16 E's in your post and only 12 X's. So aren't we more obsessed with the letter E?
