It is a good excuse for pressies and parties. Jesus was actually born in Oct of our calender so Dec 25th is just an arbitrary date.

The Christmas celebration was started to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. As time has went on people have added different beliefs and traditions to it.

As the three wise men came to see the baby Jesus they brought Him gifts which is why we give gifts to others on Christmas.

The Christmas tree was started sometime later as a symbol of everlasting life (I think in Egypt).

The candying was made as an upside down "J" which stood for Jesus and the red stripes was for the blood He shed and the white was for eternal life.

Santa Claus was started by this guy name Nicolas Clause that would give orphaned children gifts. He died and then they made him a saint and he became Santa clause the guy that likes little kids to sit on his lap and whisper secrets in his ears and them he brakes into their houses in the middle of the night to bring them toys and candy.

We celebrate Christmas for a number of reasons

It is a combination of pre Christian winter pagan festivals ,the appropriation of them for the purposes of the christian religion and tradition over a number of millenia.

umm well basically to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but for all us non-religious people its just a time to celebrate being alive, and having family and friends, and showing compassion.

I love Christmas =)

we are suppose to celebrate it because it's the birth of jesus christ, nowadays we have forgotten the true meaning. we go out and buy all these expensive gifts and christmas is more than that.

There is not one reason. It's different for everyone. For some, it's simply a winter tradition so the family can get together. For others, it's a religious holiday, and for others, it's simply for gifts. Personally, it's a mix of religious and getting the family together, and it's not really about gifts. We even have a 'cap' on gifts. You can't spend more than 25.00 on one person.
