My son that's 14 is in grade 9 and is not doing well, When he was in grade 3 they told me he was at a grade 7 level reading and math, So in know his not dump, but when he reached grade 5 he started to lose interest not doing work in class not bringing any work home, I would stay up with him till 12 sometimes bushing him to do it, he would start but before long he would just stare at the ceiling thinking of other things. well last year we moved to another country and his had to learn a new language, well its been a year and we have been trying very hard to help him out, with tutors 4 days a week, witch is cousting us a lot of money. We had a talk with his teachers and he is up to the same old stuff, not handing in papers, not writing down what is on the board, handing in blank exames. But when it come to talking with freinds his fine. Don't know want to do, how do I get him to start taking school seriously?

look, its happens because when you do something for a long time, you lose interest afterwards. Its his star signs playing up! I may be very similar to him, i was very smart until grade 9, after that i lost interesting in studying and my grades fall. and Now iam in year 12 trying again. Try to do funs things with him, keep a watch on him, so he doesn't take drugs and do bads thing with his friends like all parents do, give him time and talk to him about his day at school everday

i add more later! :)

Hi Lara,

Not sound too nasty but maybe his home environment isn't stimulating him enough? You can't spell so that is an issue. I expect your son is not doing his homework because he is smarter than you and his teachers realise.

The boy is bored becuse school work is not giving him any challenges, so why bother with the school work? He isn't really learning anything because he is being taught things that he has already grasped the meaning of.

ADD and ASD and all these other "supposedly" conditions are a myth, give the lad a goal, not some mundane learn by rote rubbish.

Military school might do the trick. If he chooses not to be responsible, you have to force responsibility upon him before he screws up his future. Mention Military school to him in order to scare him a bit...or even an all boy school :)

It is hard to make someone do something he doesn't want to do...somehow you have to find a way that will trigger a 'wake-up call' and he will be serious again. Who knows, maybe he wants to portray an image at school and not be considered a nerd...ah, the teenage years can be brutal.

sounds like ADD some of the medicine is harmful(in the long term) that doctors will give but there is other ways to deal with it. Take him to you're doctor and have him send you to a specialist. A guy i went to high school had it he learned to deal with it and does very well now.

It's a shame when smart kids aren't challenged enough (as was the case when he was younger) it sounds like he got bored. he needs some good motivation and possibly discipline ( no i don't mean spanking ) maybe an extra curricular activity that teaches discipline, like karate.

looking at your spelling it seems you need help also , maybe he is not in the level of school he needs to be in , maybe he's bored because subjects are below his level , are private schools available ? less student to teacher ratio ? look into this it might be the same cost as tutors
