Hi there! Not only am I a published author, but I am also an editor. I work with lots of small publishing companies.... in order to get published, as a first time author, you really need to finish your book first. Then you want to have the book professionally edited, write a killer query letter, and then start submitting the book to mid-sized publishers or agents and then wade through the rejections until you have someone willing to take a chance on you.
The biggest issue for a new author is to make your manuscript the very best it can be - that means edit it, read it, reread it, let your friends read it and listen to their feedback, and then read it out loud too. Be sure you use proper manuscript format and read all of the publisher's guidelines before you submit it to them and follow their guidelines to the letter.
Good luck with your book - it's a very exciting thing!
A side note to Gadfly - any agent who charges a fee is a scam artist - NOT a real agent. A REAL agent will NEVER charge you a penny - not one penny. They don't charge reading fees - and they only make money when they sell your manuscript for you and you make money too. If you have paid an agent to read your manuscript, you have been taken by a scam artist, not a real literary agent.
Remember - the money flows to the author, not from.

If you are only aiming to have in published, have an official IBN number, and a few copies to impress people with then you should try Publishing On Demand. There are several places that do this. One of the cheapest and most reliable I've found is Lulu (www.lulu.com) but there are a lot around if you look for them!

Hello Aisha,
I inhabit in Brazil, and therefore I do not know the ways publishing of its country. But I believe in such a way that there as here, the processes to publish a book are difficult.
I suggest you who start looking sites that receive books from new authors, thus you you will be divulging its work and becoming its known name, beyond receiving and evaluations of its workmanship critical.
You desire success. By , Moran

Don't expect much from the traditional publishing industry. Most of them won't even look at new authors now. Even agents are hard to get, and often charge you money just to look at your manuscript.
Self publishing is probably the best way to go. It doesn't cost much is quick and easy. If you want to know more, go to http://www.lulu.com. And, no, I do not work for them, but they do work for me.

get the resourse writer's market. worry more about the manuscript than the publishing aspect. is the book done? edited?
are you ready to ship it off?
writer's market will tell you about agents, query letters, pub houses, etc.
expect a LOT of rejection, even if you are the next Dave Eggers.

Do a search for a really good literary agent and show your manuscript to him. A literary agent would help your manuscript reach a publisher and from then, who knows where it takes you. :)
