like rotten eggs. What is this and should we be worried? (this is not a joke, btw)

It could be a number of things, see links below. Open your windows and try to air it out, See if it's coming from one spot. The rotten egg smell is methane, in enough concentration it's explosive. If it's really strong call a plumber, otherwise wait and it'll be gone in a day or two.

The possible logical explanation that I can come up with at this point is the possibility that the empty tank produced a lot of gases when it was emptied. The gas (fumes) must have traveled back up the septic line and is leaking into your house at some location. You can go into the basement, or whatever point the septic line leaves the house, and look for the vent, or vent pipes and make sure that they leave the house through the roof. Check any sewer lines for possible leaks. Maybe an old sink line in the basement has dried up around the trap (u-type pipe that holds water to prevent the sewer smell form entering the house). That happened in my house once and all I had to do was add water to the old sink. It solved the problem.
Good luck.

Unless you have a leak in your plumbing in the house the most likely causes are
1) While they were pumping the tank on the truck got too full and excess leaked out .
2) A hose leaked sewage onto the ground
3) Someone walked through a area where a pipe had leaked and tracked it into the house.
4) The lid was left off the cesspool

For the first two find the area where the leak happened and spread some lime rather thickly around the area. For #3 either steam clean your carpets or sprinkle carpet freshner on the area and let it sit longer than normal. For #4 put the lid back on and cover it up.

The sewer lines back into your house should all be protected from any sewer gasses by the water seals in the traps. If you have a floor drain, the seal may have evaporated or maybe somehow. with the emptying of the cesspool, the water in the trap was sucked out. Run water in all your sinks and pour a gallon of water down any floor drains. Don't forget you drain for the washing machine too.

Yogurt, to start the bacteria again. Should have had crusted Bits in there this stops the spell.
For a quick fix, Whack a pipe (Place a pipe) in it and run it as high as you can support the pipe this will disperse the odour. Higher than the house would be good and also venterlate all. "Breath"

put water in all your drains it could have been suck out by accident and look for any leaky pipes . also watch for water around your toilet when you flush . more that likely it is a p-trap in a sink that has no water in it this prevents sewer gas from coming into your house .
