If biodiesel is used in a conventional diesel engine or if a small proportion of coconut oil is added to petroleum diesel then emissions may be drastically reduced. However, to call a diesel engine smoke free is an exaggeration. Diesel fuelled passenger cars are very popular in Europe but not so popular in the States where people still equate them with being slow and dirty. For unknown reason despite diesel being more environmentally friendly than gasoline / petrol it is often sold more expensively perhaps illustrating that country's lack of commitment to reducing climate changing emissions. Finally, diesel passenger cars are more expensive than their gasoline / petrol counterparts providing another disincentive to put diesel passenger vehicles on the road.

Most governments and car manufacturers have money money invested in oil companies so they insist that the price of diesel vehicles be high and offer environmental rebates for people who buy diesel vehicles. The main reason that diesel vehicles are rare is that they are expensive. But if everyone drove diesel vehicles they could all make biodiesel out of old fast food grease (which restaurants will pay you to take away). Thus, less people would buy fuels made from crude oil...too bad because even diesel is more environmentally friendly than gasoline.

In europe many passenger cars are diesel. I'm in the UK and I've owned several diesel and turbodiesel cars. I think they have a reputation of being slow and smelly in the US. To some extent they are slower than petrol cars and they do smell but they're not anywhere near as bad as they used to be and I know a few people with VW TDi's that are stupendously fast over here.

Because we are idiots. A large percentage of German cars are turbo diesels, and diesel is the cheapest fuel there.

They used to be historically slower, until they started turbo'ing them. A golf 1.8 TDI's torque will put you into the seat.

They also get excellent MPG, I got over 45mpg in a Mercedes diesel driving to Italy last month.

The engines will also last at least as twice as long as a gas engine, and there are no spark plugs or wires to change.

Diesel might be cheap where you live, but not everywhere. Also, they are historically slower, and I don't think they do make them smoke free. They are less enironmentally friendly than unleaded petrol. That is why green minded countries around the world have increased the price of diesel.

In the US...there aren't any that meet the diesel emissions regulations...though a number of manufacturers are bringing compliant versions to the market in 07.

You must be joking if you are Indian.

The maximum number of vehicles on road in the form of taxies are INDICA cars and they run on Diesel. It is a myth now.
Ear;ier it was true that due to higher sulphur content the engine used to have a low life and it required regular expensive maintenance. But now due to improved condition of engine adn fuel both thsi is no more true.
so be confident and buy one without hesitation.

I wouldn't want one because not every gas station sells Diesel and what if you're out in the middle of nowhere and the only gas station there doesn't sell it! Besides don't they cost a lot more?
