Red Cross is NOT a sign of medical, rather its a sign of Red Cross Society. Only Red Cross or its authorised people can use it. However people do use it without permission. If you observe clearly, its actually a White Cross surrounded by red color. So it 'appears' as a Red Cross. Just look clearly. This is specially with drug stores/chemists.

The same.

Depends which organisation is involved.

The Red & Green crescent in Muslim countries are also first aid symbols.

EDIT

Green Cross does not only relate to the organisation in the answer below.

Green crosses are used on the majority of first aid boxes, and is the symbol of St Johns Ambulance.

In fact my 1st Aid armband at work has a green cross on it, and we have nothing to do with Green Cross International

Green Cross International is an environmentalist organization founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993.

Not sure if this helps: I have seen it printed on hard hats in construction sites in Japan; I have seen it printed on armband of emergency units; I have seen it on first-aid boxes

Seems to me it's related to "safety"?
