It sounds like you have a lot that is on your mind. I am also mixed. My father is black and my mother is white/Italian. First everyone is different. Second, you do not need to choose who you are (one race or another) as some less informed people may try to make you believe. I am very bright, and my brother is darker than me. While my hair is a mixture, in order to achieve a straight style without it kinking up in moister, I must put a perm on my hair. My brother's hair on the other hand is the opposite. His hair has a softer curl, where mine is tighter, and his hair is silkier.
Hair, however, does not define who you are. You define who you are. While my parents divorced when I was young, I still have close contact with both of them. As a result, I was able to connect with both sides of my family. While most of my friends are black, and I have always dated black men, I am not opposed to dating or having friends that are white. For me, it just happened because of where I went to school. I went to an all black middle and high school. When I was in elementary, I had friends from many races because it was less segregated so to speak, and in my first middle school most of my friends were Hispanic, because that was the majority.
Anyway, the color of your skin or the texture of your hair no more defines your blackness as saying because I’m tall I can play ball. What I recommend, which is what I did and still do, is introspect. Discover and determine who you are. Who you are as an individual, how you want to grow, and who you want to be. Unfortunately, in America we put too much emphasis on race and less on the individual person. I myself, on applications check black, other or biracial depending on my mood. I claim both sides of my family because without both of them I would not be here. You do not have to choose, so do not let society make you choose. Remember choosing and relating are two different things. I do not choose between my heritages, but do I relate more with the black community. (I also relate very well with Italian food!!)
You sound like you are still young, and it is normal and natural to have such feelings, just try your best to determine who you are, not what society wants you to be.
I have not read the book, but I assume it will be good, by Barack Obama Dreams From My Father, he is, if you have not heard, a biracial male, who is deemed the next president. While I do not get into politics, his story may be good for you, because he had issues identity as well.
Just remember, be nobody but yourself, and you will be fine.

Does it really matter? You've got a mom that loves you and friends that care about you...that's more than some people have.
