my neighbor missed court yesterday due to her son being ill and she wrecked her car last wed. so she had no transportation either. she has 5 days to turn in a letter for reasons as to why another court date should be set. is that typically true and what should she say?

Yes, this is typical...court is like school, you have to have a valid reason to miss. If I were her, I would bring both a note from her child's doctor or school stating the child was sick, and a copy of any accident report. The court is not likely to have much sympathy on the transportation issue, she could have called a friend or cab for a ride, but the sick child may get her a pass. It is important she do this as quickly as possible or the court will proceed in her absence, enter a default judgment, and she will be responsible for any costs plus interest of any money she owes her landlord. He can ask the court to kick her out as well as garnish her wages, and she will have no legal recourse short of hiring a lawyer to petition the court to set aside the default judgment, which they woun't do without a very good reason.
