What did the ending mean? What the hell was that black monolith for? etc.

I guess you should read the book. Because I first read the book and the saw the film. I agree that the film without the book is completely chaotic. In my opinion at the end represents reaching another level higher than our here on earth, a place and condition in which everything i possible.

I understood it more after I read the book.
The guy was found by some aliens (the monolith), who took care of him (the old man eating dinner) and basically merged with him and made a new hybrid alien-human race (the baby), which set off to explore the universe.
Or something like that.

I saw it a long time ago remember all the great music and of course Hal the computer that tries to take over and has to be "killed" before it kills the human astronauts in the spaceship.
But no I never understood it.

Read the book...you'll like the movie then...its a whole series - 2001,2010 - odyssey2,2061 - odyssey3,and 3001 - Final Odyssey.....Bowman is again one of the main charachters in all of them(later he becomes HALman....merges with HAL)

Noone got that movie and everyone plays smart and say they do understand it.
