It can come down to personal preference, but there are some benefits that some notice.
Fullscreen, you see the movie up close. (Some think the black spaces above and below in widescreen are annoying.)
In widescreen, you see more of the movie, just as you would have if you saw it in the theaters. (If you see a movie in theaters, you may notice that there are black spaces above and below in most of the movies shown there too. So what is really the difference at home? Not much, as long as your tv is capable of showing widescreen without difficulty)
It may seem a bit smaller on screen in widescreen format (the black spaces may cause the viewing space to shrink on many televisions), and bigger in full screen (you lose the sides of the movie where there is sometimes more movie to actually see), but that will be up to the viewer.
Me, I prefer widescreen, 'cause I like to see all of the movie and not miss any part of the scenes like you do in full screen (the little bit of the movie hidden on either side, right and left, that might show something important). You don't want to miss anything that you might catch later when watching it again and go, "I don't remember that...."

Easy way to figure the difference is to find an old copy of Jaws in "formatted to fit your TV" and then watch in widescreen. There is a scene where Roy Scheider is talking to Richard Dryfuss, very emotional gripping stuff. In widescreen you see it all, in Full Screen, you do not see Dryfuss. If you can get past the bars--always go widescreen, it gives you the actual movie going experience and you see the film as it was meant to be seen.

It also has to do with element ratio. Widescreen has a ratio of 16:9 and finished reveal screen has a ratio of four:3. a movie reveal screen is in many situations 16:9. in case you study a scene from a fullscreen and widescreen you'll absolutely look extra of the image on the widescreen. Fullscreen will crop of slightly from the left and proper.

Personal preference.
I prefer widescreen, because why would I want to lose the extra information that was cut off when they made the full-screen version?

I find wide screen annoying on a regular TV. I feel like I've been jipped on either my TV, movie, or both.
On a wide screen TV their great, no complaints.
