She is like Marmite, either loved or loathed.
This is from Wikipedia -
''As a monetarist, Thatcher started out in her economic policy by increasing interest rates to slow the growth of the money supply and thus lower inflation. She had a preference for indirect taxation over taxes on income, and value added tax (VAT) was raised sharply to 15%, with a resultant actual short-term rise in inflation. These moves hit businesses -- especially the manufacturing sector -- and unemployment quickly passed two million, doubling the one million unemployed under the previous Labour government.

Political commentators harked back to the Heath Government's "U-turn" and speculated that Mrs Thatcher would follow suit, but she repudiated this approach at the 1980 Conservative Party conference, telling the party: "To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catch-phrase—the U-turn—I have only one thing to say: you turn if you want to; the Lady's not for turning."[3] That she meant what she said was confirmed in the 1981 budget, when, despite concerns expressed in an open letter from 364 leading economists, taxes were increased in the middle of a recession. In January 1982, the inflation rate dropped to single digits and interest rates were then allowed to fall. Unemployment continued to rise, reaching an official figure of 3.6 million — although the criteria for defining who was unemployed were amended allowing some to estimate that unemployment in fact hit 5 million. However, Norman Tebbit has suggested that, due to the high number of people claiming unemployment benefit whilst working, unemployment never reached three million.

By 1983, manufacturing output had dropped 30% from 1978.''

Many people admired her resilience and tenacity. Other people just saw a stubborn woman out to ruin the country.

A lot of people like to blame Margaret Thatcher for destroying industry and closing the mines.
These same people seem to conveniently forget the part the labour unions played. By the 1970's Britain was known as the Sick man of Europe. Constant demands for higher wages and strikes to back up those demands have led to the demise of manufacturing in Britain (too expensive)
The motor industry, the mines, the east end docks in London etc., all closed.
Blame Thatcher? I don't think so!!
Blame a succession of misguided labour governments that rose to power on the backs of the unions and then did not have the means to control them.

BRITISH PEOPLE DO NOT HATE MARGARET THATCHER! I don't know where you got that idea from but you had better start doing some more research. Black Wednesday was a low point but she gave people the right to buy their council houses at discounted rates so that they could own property and was, in my opinion, the BEST PRIME MINISTER of the late 20th Century.

In the 1980's lots of people were on strike due to policies she created. Lots of people supported the miners. Lots of people lost their jobs to Tory cuts. Quite a few people just hate Thatcher and all she stood for.

Lady Thatcher, who was the UK's Premier from 1979 to 1990, seems to be the most hated Prime Minister to date. When Margaret Thatcher was Secretary of State she stopped universal free school milk. This is how everyone remembers her. "Thatcher Thatcher the milk snatcher".

Hello,

Its simple Margaret Thatcher was only one step removed from being an utter dictator.

*Thatcher played the macho male game of politics better & tougher than most of the men in her own cabinet. The cabinet were scared of her in the early days of her term.

**Thatcher was a control freak just like Tony Blair is now & Thatcher also believed her own lies, propganda & spin (she didnt need a spin doctor) just like Tony Blair today.

**Thatcher didnt little or nothing for woman even though it was largely woman that swung the electon in her favour.

**I still believe that Thatcher did enormous economic damage to this country as a result of her policies. We have little or no real manufacturing industry left in this county as a consiquence. We have become soley a service economy after thatcher, now its digital swet shops & customer call centres (well the ones that havent gone to india or the third world anyway!).

**Why? do (did) people hate thatcher because her policies divided the whole country into grinding poor & stinking rich with little inbetween (inequality). Thatcher caused a sickening culture of acceptible greed and selfishness i.e. look out for number one and screw anyone esle.

I could go on and on but think you've probably got my point by now.

Amongst other things she encouraged the greed of individuals and this contributed to a less caring community. She despised the poor and made life hard for them. Her government introduced the Council tax and cut back on social spending. School fields sold off, hospitals underfunded etc. Blair kept most of her bad policies, in some cases went further then she would have dared at the time. That is why many people feel betrayed by Blair.

In a nutshell Margaret Thatcher had some very tough decisions to make, and she always made them, and never faltered...some were wrong, but most were right, and we are a booming country largely as a result of her putting the unions in their place.
She was a true statesperson, and the history books will have her up there as one of our great leaders.Nobody messed with the Iron lady, and I admired her intelligence, wit, and toughness...just what a great country needs

I didn't know that British people hated Margaret Thatcher. I didn't for one. She didn't give in to all those striking miners who held the country to ransom during our coldest winter months. I don't think the word "Strike" was in her vocabulary. I think she had guts, as far as I'm concerned she stuck to her beliefs and didn't bow cow to anyone. She stepped down due to pressure from within her own party because no-one had any bottle to back her up.

Margaret Thatcher destroyed the mining industry in the UK.
Watch "Brassed Off" for a social history lesson about the coalfields of South Yorkshire in the 80s.
