My computer just stopped working suddenly. First of all the power wouldn't come on - then it came on once and went off again. The light that is usually green (the power button) and a little light underneath the power button that usually flashes is now a solid yellow all the time and nothing is happening! Does anyone have any idea what has happened? Thanks!

First things first.... Check that the power cable has not come loose. This seems unlikely as the fact that you have a light on (possibly HD access light) means the PC is getting some power. The question is how computer literate are you? Can you hear the internal fan working? Can you hear the HD running?
You say your monitor is not working either? Is this on a seperate power lead or one running from your computer box? I would suspect that your power supply unit has gone. Easy to replace so don't panic!! Email me if you need anymore help.

This should help you,
Make sure that you have switched on both your computer and your monitor,
( caution switch on the monitor first then computer )
your computer is in suspend or power saving mode
1. If the computer is in power saving mode, move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to wake up the computer. the light should turn green,
2. If the computer is in suspend mode, press the power button, after a short pause the light should light up and you will be able to use your computer
you might want to change the suspend mode or turn it of completely, to do this:
click start
click on: control panel
click on: performance and maintenance
click on: power options
you will see "settings for home/office desk power scheme"
there will be the option to turn off the monitor [ never ]
there will be the option to turn off the disks [ never ]
there will be the option to turn off the system standby [ never ]
there will be the option to turn off hibernates [ never ]
A screen saver maybe active .
1. press any key on the keyboard to reactivatethe display
2. If you wish to change the screen saver properties:
3. Close all open programs, with the exception of windows
4. Right click on an empty spot on the windows desktop.
5. Select properties from the menu.
6. Adjust the screen saver properties and the monitor energy saving features to your needs.
good luck.

A lot of up to date motherboards have built in protection if the processor fan has stopped working. There is a sensor that shuts the pc down. If not it will burn the chip out. The one I`m using now was given to me for the same reason. A new fan solved the problem. Remove the side or get someone to remove it and see if the fan runs when you boot it up. Hopefully that will be your problem. A certain large well know outlet stocks a lot of replacement fans. It could be the main power supply. If it is they are not usually more than £25.00. From a good supplier. Dont get ripped off if you need a new one.

This usually means its in sleep mode. Before going to more extensive solutions try pressing and holding for atleast 3 seconds the shut down button. It may have gotten stuck. When you turn on, make sure it completely releases outward. It happens to my computer all the time.

I will need more then this info to solve your problem, but it looks like a hardware failure of either your motherboard, processor or hard disk, if it stopped suddenly then this might be the processor fan, try to open the case and check if the processor fan is working fine or not, if it is working fine then you will have to take your PC to experts where they will exchange the required part.

Check your power cable. If the cable is faulty or has come slightly loose inside the computer, it may switch on bt not boot completely. It stops booting at a certain point.

It could be a number of problems... might just need a new power pack or it could mean a new harddrive... take it to a computer shop and they'll sort it for you...ask them first to have a look at it and then take it to another place and do the same to make sure they not having you off... just like you would wih your car!

I would try a different power supply to start with, if the same results, then you have to look at possible cpu/motherboard malfunction, could even be one ram module has packed up, if you have 2 chips in there try one at a time see if it boots with one in there.also are you hearing any POST beeps on bootup?

last time, our computer had a problem. It wouldn't turn on. i'm not sure if we have the same problem but i'm suggesting that the problem is the motherboard. if it is, you have to replace it.
also, you may consider that a virus attacked your computer
the best way to troubleshoot a computer is to hire a technician or someone who's really knowledgeable about computers.

â Uplug PC - leave alone for around 30 mins
â Replug in PC
â Try the pc in normal mode - normal windows settings
If that fails please continue if you are fairly good with PCs:
â Reboot (restart pc)
â Open in safe mode
â Open as system adminstrator
â If the problem occured just after installing sofeware uninstall the recent software
â Run a safe mode troubleshoot
â Try pc is normal mode
