It depends which part of the country you're in. Trains are really expensive if you're going further than a 20 mile radius. If you're near a city, have a look online at tourist information as there might be lots of museums that are free to get into and galleries.
If you're in the countryside, you could pack up a picnic and head off for a walk in the hills or something. If it's raining and you're in the countryside, you might just have to get a dvd in, make a nice meal and spend 'quality time' together?!?

Why not go camping?

Someone you know must have a tent and it's a really good laugh if you get the right site with a few facilities.

It'll cost you next to nothing and your having a weekend away!

if you in london check out the freelondon.com site. it has all events free depending on your mood. I would also recomend cheking for local sam smiths pubs, they priced like weathspoons but tend to have a more traditional pubby atmosphere and nicer crowds in them.

otherwise its chips and a dvd for the pair of ya!

if you are close enough, try beachcoming, it is amazing what can be found washed up on a beach at this time of year, if nothing else it would give you time together with few distractions and it is free to do.
