I have a friend who is 35, divorced with 3 kids and has bipolar. She is currently seeing a guy who is living with his girlfriend. She also works for me although she can be lazy at times. She keeps telling me that she has made a mess of her life but I think she has potential if she only tried

if your description is accurate and honest, she probably hasnt got the insight into her life to "try." Her pathology will continue to steer her into self destructive relationships and situations.

who knoes what is wrong with her. if she cant figure it out, i doubt you are going to be able to. you sound like a man with "i can fix her syndrome." thats a slippery slope. what are you trying to make up for by "saving her" so to speak? be careful or she'll try to unload all of her chaos on to you. people like her need to create chaos in their lives. most likely because that is how they grew up. go on, ask her. i bet her parents divorced when she was young, perhaps one of them was a drug/alcohol addict. thus she chooses men that will not be there for her as i suspect her dad wasnt there for her. ie, a boyfriend that is not a boyfriend at all, but rather, seriously involved with someone else.
