Well, in most cases it's up to the cat whether they will get along or not, because a dog is willing to get along with almost anything. If they are raised together from babies they will most likely learn to love each other within days of meeting each other. If they don't meet until they are older, you'll just have to cross your fingers and don't force them to spend time together. They'll have to gradually and slowly get used to each other, and it could be a long process, IF they decide to get along.

Well, it really depends on the amount of space available for them. If there's limited space, they tend to step on each other's tail (metaphorically speaking). Give the cat its personal space and everything else will work out fine. Usually, the dog's more compromising.
