I think we really tend to overrate our own - those countries generally have much smaller populations to pick players from and also it's not a big sport in their school systems - yet we keep getting our lunch handed to us the last few years ??

I think other guys are just getting better. Also, I believe these other guys are more accustomed to amateur rules and to playing together.

One big difference is the zone defense. This makes one on one plays more difficult. To beat it there must be a lot of passing and a lot of role playing. The NBA rules on the other hand encourage a lot of one-on-one plays by restricting the zone defense.

And last, I think Americans were given an illusion of invincibility with the first dream team that is impossible for later teams to duplicate. No way can these young guys compare to a first five of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Add to that guys like Karl Malone, John Stockton and Patrick Ewing. You can't get five on the floor now that comes close to that pantheon. More than just their skills, - their names alone strikes terror in the hearts of mortals -.

The world wide competition has gotten better and they much more fundamental basketball compared to the American fastbreak, slamdunk kind of basketball. If the NBA players get serious about playing good basketball, then they could dominate agian.
