Father Christmas, according to legend is about 1500 years old. If I recall correctly, Saint Nicholas was a Bishop that lived round the 3rd or Fourth century.
So the story goes he was very generous and thus the tradition started with him.
An alternative view, that he was born of a pagan custom also holds some merit.
It really doesn't matter--it is the spirit of the thing that does, at least to me.

Father Christmas is our version of Santa Claus. He is an old jolly man with white hair, a beard and a moustache. He is dressed in a red* suit outlined in white. Father Christmas and his elves make all the toys for Christmas in his home in the North Pole.
*The red coat is 'new'. Images of Father Christmas prior to about 1880 most pictures showed him with a green coat. The red became the most popular colour after the US introduction by Coca Cola during the 1930s.

Well I'll put it like this he not only is a father he is now a great grandfather, has to get up 12 times a night to pee and is rarely seen without his slippers a tartan warmer over his knees and needs to be reminded when Christmas is

In my household, father christmas is 48 years old.
