Not all USA businesses have a Hire & Fire policy. It's up to the states, not the companies. If a state allows H & F, then any company in that state can (theoretically) use it. However, fired employees still have the right to take the company to court and sue them if the employee feels the firing was unjustified and such people do win such lawsuits, although not always. That said, employees in America don't have the constant fear you mention.

This is from my own experience. I worked in Japanese company for 13 years, then I accepted offer from a friend in European company control by American management. During my probation period, i over heard from the top manager when speaking among them, that they should not be too kind to "newcomer". Then couple of weeks later I informed that I was terminated. So be verycareful when working with them. Until now i'm still unemployed.

It is very true. And not only do you have to perform well, but you must not "make waves" (do not complain or make enemies). Also, try to smile a lot.

It is very scary, but there are no guarantees in life. When I get scared, I pray, and I think of my friends and family, and other things outside of work that make me happy. I try to remind myself that the job is a job and not my life.

Do not fear, have faith.
