First of all, alcohol prohibition did not save lives. In fact, it caused huge problems. Among there were a huge increase in homicides, and the worst teen drinking epidemic this country has ever seen. You can read some good information on what happened at http://druglibrary.org/prohibitionresults.htm
I am no fan of alcohol and rarely drink it, but it is clear that making alcohol illegal was a disaster.
For those who have said that there is no reason to make marijuana legal, they need to read the short history of why it is illegal in the first place. See http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm
Then they need to read the major government commission reports on the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer under Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy. Every major study of the subject in the last 100 years has said that the marijuana laws were based on racism, ignorance, and nonsense, and should have been repealed long ago because they do more harm than good.
Bottom line, prohibition doesn't work. It might be nice if it did, but it just doesn't. It causes more problems than it solves.
There is perhaps only one area in which making marijuana illegal might save lives. Many former alcoholics report that smoking marijuana is what allowed them to get off of alcohol. While one may argue that they should have quit drugs entirely, that simply isn't in the cards for most addicts. Recovery rates are typically very low - about five percent per year, regardless of the type of treatment they receive.
If it is so difficult to get them to quit entirely then a better plan is to give them milder, safer drugs until they can mature out of their addiction. That is where marijuana might save some lives. How many it would save is open to speculation because only a minority of alcoholics would find pot to be their preferred substitute. If they did use marijuana, they would be less likely to die from alcohol-related problems, and they would have fewer problems with things like auto accidents. Whether that would be detectable in the statistics is anyone's guess. My guess is that the effect would not be large enough that anyone could conclusively verify it.

To but it simply, NO
Marijuna will never be legalized if they did it would no longer be "Cool" every real pothead would move on to harder stuff because alot of them only do it for the adreniline rush of doing something they are not suppost to "Rather or not they realize it" the whole appear of Marijuna is that its ILLEGAL is why 99% of people try it.
Its why teens start to smoke cigereets becase its ILLEGAL and people get rushes off doing stuff they shouldnt or are not suppost to do.
Cocain however was the only major drug that Ive seen that was completly removed from the US who in the early part of century somewhere around 80% of the people in the coountry were addicted do to its use in almost every consumer product.
They tried with alcohol and caused more problems them it helped. Reguardless to popular beliefe the government does not profit from the sales or non-sales of marijuna.
Look at it this way, generally the people in the government are intelligent people... they may have their own agendas in mind more so then the american people but still intelligent
If they feel and say its not a good thing then who are a bunch of 30 year old drop outs who claim they have back pain at a protest rally to prove them wrong.
No one can give a good answer why it should be legalized they just say it should because they like to get high. Don't beleive me attend a ralley they will scream and yell about the law and the government but never say the REAL reason why it should be legalized other then they like to get high and of course you will have the "Terminal Pain" people that claim they need it for health reasons and they are full of the sob storys let me tell you.
Anyway I think I went off topic so Ill end it here :)

ABSOLUTELY!
Trouble is...they like us drunk and stupid. They can take our money, control us, scare us and have our personal information to keep track of us slowly... but surely..., one ...by one....or should I say: hundreds by hundreds.....
When is the last time any of you read or heard a news head line about a person who strictly used marijuana and killed, shot, wrecked, maimed, raped, molested, robbed, committed A&B, on themselves or anyone else? Where are the facts? Where are the headlines? There aren't any! These crimes are committed when man made drugs and alcohol are involved. Not an herb/plant.

Not really. The correct social practice would be to limit consumption of both to minimize social and medical costs. Taxation and illegality do that, but not in ideal fashion.
Total decriminalization of drugs may bring us back to the drug parties of the early 20th Century -- that led to Harry Anslinger and the over-reaction in terms of illegalization and crime of that followed.
Prohibition was a failed experiment; unless one goes so far as Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries to punish alcohol viciously and vigorously, it can't be wiped out and one will just bring back the age of the speakeasy. Anyway, alcohol (including wine and beer) are such profitable industries that a return to limiting it to "sacramental wine" is politically and practically impossible.

If the government made alcohol illegal and marijuana legal, do you think there'd be any change in who uses them, and how often?
I'd vote maybe. Drunks kill people going home from the bar, stoners would kill people going to the 7-11 when the munchies hit.
