Tips on how to play bass guitar?

I've been playing a 6 string guitar for many years but now progressing to bass (specifically a 5 string).

Is there any exercises to do to avoid getting cramp, as I have found that trying to play for longer than 10 minutes at a time to be painful on the thumb / hand / wrists?

I am intending on using plectrums, rather than my fingers - as that's an altogether bigger problem with me!

buy a squash ball (or a tennis ball if you've got big hands) from a sports shop and squeeze it repeatedly one hand (15 or 20 times) then the other. This will build up your strength in your hands. DO NOT limit yourself to playing with a pick. If you do then your fingers will remain "soft". You need to build up calluses just like you did on your left hand when you were learning to play the guitar. Especially with a 5 string bass, funky fingerpicking and slapping is what its all about.

find a drummer! very important, bass is what the drummer uses for reference when they set tempo. besides, the clockwork helps, if you can find it, get videos from "B.I.T.". get some power!very important, atleast 50 watts. and have fun, chords dont work that great unless you break em down.but they work great when you piece them, have fun
