Good question. zoos conserve animals in many ways. one way is that they run captive breeding programs. Another way they conserve animals is that they support conservation in the habitat of the animal in question.

Mainly by keeping them healthy and happy enough that they will mate. When habitat destruction threatens a species, it is some comfort to know that the species will not be altogether lost as long as they are able to breed in captivity. There is also the possibility that some of the ones born into captivity can be released to the wild and survive. That's much of what is happening to pandas, for example.

Mainly by setting up captive breeding programmes, and by using a data base, they can ensure that not too much inbreeding occurs. They will also work at giving advice on habitat protection.

When it works, it works well. The Arabian Oryx was saved this way, along with Pere David's Deer.
