Make sure you have well insulated windows. A lot of the heat loss in a House is through poorly insulated widows. Make sure there are no drafts around the edges of the windows or opening the drapes will only cause the cold air to circulate around the house. If the widows are insulated well enough not to be cold to the touch then open the drapes and let the sun come in. Windows on the south and east of the house will let in the most light during the morning and on the west side in the afternoons.

Prepare a southern window or a window that gets direct sun: lock the windows, clean the glass and window seals.
Place the following piece of plastic on the top section of the window that gets direct sun. Cut a piece of 4 mil black plastic(thick black trashbags work great for this) 1/2" wider than the glass so you can duct tape the edges of the plastic to the window frame. Cut the duct tape in half or split it and place 1/2 of the tape on the sides of the plastic to the window frame and another piece of duct tape on the bottom part of the plastic to the window frame. Leave the top part of the plastic untapped and open to let the heat out of the top part of the framed in window.

Open the curtains & let the sunshine in. Wait for it to be shining in, & close the curtains to retain the heat as soon as there is no direct sunlight streaming in. Solar panels on the roof can be used if you want to take it to a more serious level.
