Irregular refills, dries the lighter sooner, which Will make the wick burn through the rope and wear it down... Flints, need changing when Zippy won't spark into flame, and the spongy bit usually lasts as long as Zippo....

RE:
How often do you replace a zippo wick/flint?
My zippos starting to weaken and I just bought a pack of rosonal flints, whats the wick? How often do you need to replace it? Is that the spongy material that collects the fuel? Thanks

The wick is what draws the fuel up to the top where the flint is sparked by a friction wheel. You should use ,Zippo flints, and wicks also zippo fluid. Change the wick as needed. (When it won't stay lit, after fueling)You can send a note to Zippo, and they will send you flints and a wick.

wick is the string that goes into the cottony material in the bottom. teh flint should be changed out when the old oen runs out. you will know, it will quit striking.
