As long as the size of the damage done is not extensive, you may try this trick:
First step:sing a razor-knife to cut away and remove the burned fibers, cutting them down to the base.
Step 2: Snip or cut some carpet fibers from another part of the carpet particularly along the area that is not noticeable or partly hidden. Collect adequately enough to fill the burned area.
Step 3: Saturate the burn area with glue and then use tweezers to place the carpet fibers on top of the glue. (You may use waterproof cement.) Leave it to dry and it is done! It looked pretty good for me.
If the carpet is burned or damaged substantially, your only recourse may be replacement.☺

This is what I did...... Take a bottle top or somthing that is a bit bigger than the size of the burn place over the burn and cut round the bottle top with a very sharp blade so you cut the burn out and leave a round hole in the carpet, next you want to find somewhere where you cant see the carpet eg: under tv, sofa, cabinet etc, place your bottle top onto carpet, if patterned carpet try and get exact match to the burnt piece you already cut out, use a small amount of fabric adhesive on back of un burnt cut out and place it back where the burn cut out was. When dry, use a brush in circular motion to blend carpet fibres together! Do the same with the burnt piece, place it back where you cut out un burnt piece, if you take it from behind a door, can you not get a rubber door stop and screw that in, it will save your walls when the door opens too! Really hope you understand all this, it really worked for me and noone has noticed its been done!! I have quit smoking now so it will never happen again, lol! Good Luck xx

Hopefully this is not a patterned rug and the room has a closet were you can cut a small piece of carpet out of a back corner. With a sharp knife or razor blade type box cutter cut out a circle about 1 inch around the burn spot. Don't cut out the carpet pad. Cut a pattern from the hole you cut and cut the piece from the closet exactly the same size. Use a hot glue gun and glue the new piece to the carpet pad. Brush the fibers back and forth until it is completely blended. Be careful to lay an old placemat down to put the glue gun on. You wouldn't want to burn another hole or get a glob of glue on the carpet, but if you do mineral spirits will take that out.
My youngest son burned a spot right at the door way to his room with an iron. The repair lasted 16 years till he left home and I replaced all the carpet.

Depeneding on where the burn is. If its round the edge of the carpet get some paint the same colour of the carpet and just put a little bit on to cover the burn. It should hide it.
If its in the middle of the carpet get a rug or make a claim.

indicabud's answer is correct, but....
but you can trim the very worst of the burnt pile by scraping the worst parts with a very sharp stanley knife. It will leave a very small bare patch, but probably not noticeable.
If you cannot bear to see this afterwards, the trick is this...
unscrew the metal trim in a doorways and cut a very small 5mm x 5mm piece of carpet away. Wrap your forefinger in some cling film, apply some superglue into the bare patch and cut the backing off the small square that you have cut away. Push small bunch of fibres into the glued hole and hold firm for 2 minutes. Then trim the repair with scissors.
I repaired a very badly affected carpet like this, it is a 98% perfect repair method.
please vote me ?

In the past I have cut a little bit of carpet pile from an area which isn't on view (under the couch etc) and with a tiny bit of glue have stuck it into the burn. You could claim it on the insurance etc but this worked a treat for me.

Plain carpet, any of the earlier "cut & paste" answers will do. Patterned carpet, sorry, but the only answer is buy a new carpet. In either case investment of a small amount in self adhesive "No Smoking" signs might be appropriate. (I can't believe I said that as I'm a smoker, though not one who stubs his cigarettes out on your carpet!).(Not even when drunk!).

if its shallow then cut it with some sisors (kids sisors work the best) if it is deep go to a clasit and cut out a pece slightly bigger than the cigrett burn (this also works for stanes) the take the pece of carpet and put it over the burn and with a razor cut around the cut out pece of carpet into the burned carpet now you have a big concrete hole in your carpet put the closet carpet in its place (after some fluffing it should look alright) now if you want you can put the burned pece back in your closet or just throw it away.

I carefully pulled out the burnt hairs with a pair of pliers to make a small hole, then I put a blob of glue in the hole then with the pliers I pulled some hairs out of the carpet in the corners and stuck them in the glue, after a few pulls the repair was invisible except for looking slightly cleaner, a rub over with my thumb when the glue was dry and it was invisible

Carefully cut out the burnt piece, cut another piece out of the carpet from under a cupboard or somewhere that can't be seen then glue to new piece into the hole where the burnt piece came from.
