My husband's firm has asked us to consider moving to Bangalore for 2 years. We have a 3 year old and a child on the way and will probably be living in the Whitefield/Airport road area. We currently live in France and would like my child to continue speaking french. Can any expats tell me about their experiences in moving to Bangalore?

here is my honest answer , unlike some of the others above calling it 3 rd world and so on.
climate is lovely ,pleasant. march -may is warm these days and u must hv a airconditioner. english is spoken everywhere. several international schools like jain intl school, BGS intl school etc offer french as an optional language.U have a branch of alliance francaise for networking .cost of living is cheap considering expat wages. Better if u have an indian family or close friend in bangalore in the initial few months to guide u around especially since normally foriegners are fleeced by everyone from the customs at airport to the local cabs , police , and everybody. Honesty in India is only a relative word , and everbody likes to rip u off . so dont trust anyone here with yr cash, credit cards etc.Keep all yr cash etc in the bank, and carry most of yr transactions via card ro cheque.
Accomodation is available in airport road area. Check out the nearest loaction to yr workspot and look up available accomodation thru yellow pages newspaper which carry wide advt's .( Admags and Freeads are names fo some)
have a good time. the experience will be worth it. But Most impt there is NO Racism as in the west faced by Indians

I am not an expat, but I can tell you Bangalore is the fastest growing city with modern amenities. It enjoys very good weather throughout the year. There are plenty of expats living in Bangalore. Almost all the super markets chains have opened their outlets in Bangalore. There are big malls catering to the needs of every nationality. Comparatively it is a neat city, with big gardens. But due to sudden growth the city's roads are clogged with cars and transport vehicles making the travel slow. Perhaps it is the best cosmopolitan city in India. People are friendly and cultured. I am not sure about French population in Bangalore. But there is a branch of Indo- French cultural centre " Alliance Francaise de Bangalore" teaching French. It also conducts cultural activities.

You are definitely going to love Bangalore. Certain areas have remnants of the british raj, so you'll feel at home.
Check out:
1.Cantonment area
2.To get a flat, Lavelle Road is super (British influence)
3,Benson Town is also a nice, quiet place to live for British
4.You will enjoy MG road with fast food restaurants like back home, and even the coffee house, Barista!
5.Make sure your company can get you a membership to Bangalore Club, a really elegant club with an old world feel.
The Bowring Club also has a nice feel.
6.For women, the Bangalore Ladies Club is nice for socials etc
7.Schooling is great, and Bishop Cotton School has a nice British feel, as does Sophias.
All I can say, is that you will feel right at home, and everyone speaks English.
Imagine they have Marks and Spencer right on MG Road with many British products!

Bangalore is a very expat friendly city. u will have no problems settling down here for a couple of years. there are many expat families here. food stuff is easily available in all super markets. regarding your child continuing with french. there are maximum number of international schools in bangalore. some of them opt for the IB course & others are offering IGCSE which is the international GCSE. French is a language which is taught here. even schools offering Indian certficate of education offer French as a language. so that will not be a problem for u. language will not be a barrier here as most of the locals speak/understand English & are friendly. weather also is wonderful. am sure u will enjoy your stay here.

india is not a third world country you idiot.
and banglore is very beautiful, i dont remember much(lived there till i was 7 on jayanagar rd) and wouldint have answered but then i saw that bit of stupidity.
but yea the parks are beautiful. one i remember very well is lallbhag whis transalates to red garden. you should go visit it. and it would be good if you started getting used to kannada, although everyone does speak english. and although it isnt as bad as bombay or hyderabad, the water there has some bacteria that the people there are immune to. but ppl like us who arent used to it should allways drink only water that has been boiled or filtered with a heavy duty system. and never, ever, ever eat or drink any thing from an outside source that isnt a respectable 5 star resturant. our bodies just arent used to it. also get all the standard shots and whatnot. about your daughter cbse is the best for her. she will learn english, hindhi, very advanced math, and all in all she will be much smarter than she would be in the west. about the french thing im sure if you keep talkin to her in french and hire a tutor and such she wont forget. and im sure there other french ppl there too.

,,,sorry to diverse from the question, but i am sorry Dee,,, India is a third world country, till it can look to all its poor people, which is an improbability, with more than a billion people there, then it will always be third world,,but , to the question, i have been to Bangalore twice , and as it was said it it a up and coming city, very cosmopolitan, not Britain,, not by a long chalk, but to other parts of India, it is a nice place to settle for a few years
