It won't happen in your lifetime or mine.
There are too many conflicting interests between countries, and most countries want to be independent.
The growing trends toward economic unions could be a beginning of a trend that could eventually see a "one world" government and nation, but this is centuries away if it is even possible, and I seriously doubt it is possible.
Another answerer blames this on President Bush. Other people are accusing Bush of trying to implement a North American economic union. Poor President Bush cannot win for losing.
Religious differences will also be a major factor. Surprisingly, the United States stands as a superb example of how diverse religions can live and work side-by-side without conflict, and President Bush has done as much as any one president to help sustain this.

You want to give up your sovereignty to some world body? I'm an American and will stay that way, thanks.
Peace is a foley. It will never, ever happen except in short periods of time. Think how many wars are going on now around the world. Peace is a pipe dream. Defence is reality.

This is an oversimplification of an ideal world. Even with with country being unified there may not be any end for terrorism as long as we as people have differences in racial ideology and relgion, even in America there is terrorism and hate crimes constantly occuring. Maybe one day when the people of earth have evolved well enough to be able to overlook differences and appriciate one another as humans and nothing else.... we won't need a unification of all nations

This idea is explored in the anime series Gundam Wing. The Earth joins together and forms the World Nation. I think if you picked the right leaders, smart and benevolent, then you have a much better chance of keeping such a country together.

Why would we want to? I think a lot of countries like being their own country, having their own identity, culture. A world where everyone is the same would be pretty bloody boring. There will always be differences of opinion, which usually leads to fighting. The alternative is a policy of government such as German National Socialism. A orwellian fascist state with no checks and balances or room for dissent and discourse. Afterall, men define themselves by competition with other men, which is why we like sports, like to earn money, and like to fight wars. It's the unfortunate truth.

One world government? I don't think I'd like to pay the taxes. Consider how many nations are deep in debt, how many are starving, how many just don't like the guy down the street. People like to fight. People like to lie to each other. People like to use altruism as a quest for more power.
We are all selfish. I'd say there can't be lasting peace unless either A. Humanity succeeds in killing all but one person, and that person is seriously happy-go-lucky, or B. We all go insane in a really happy, laid-back way. Put two people in a room together, you'll most likely have brotherly love for a time. Put three in there, it'll get kinky. Put six billion in there, oy...

Sounds like one world government which sounds ok on the surface but could well be a form of dictatorhip without checks and balances. Who would run it? Marx, Moon or Masons?

Stop plagarizing John Lennon's "Imagine" lyrics.
Right this instant!
The closest we've been able to get is the UN. And look how THAT is turning out.

that's impossible - we can't even get the UN to work and that's far smaller than what you're proposing. Even EU nations maintain borders
